The line up of luminary speakers to keynote at ARE 2012, the world’s largest augmented reality event, will blow your mind.

The first we are revealing is Adrian David Cheok, Professor at Keio University, Graduate School of Media Design, in Tokyo Japan, as well as a Young Global Leader at World Economic Forum.

Dr. Cheok has been a hero of mine in pushing the envelop of augmented reality. He will join an amazing group of keynote speakers in previous years.

Adrian has been a champion of the idea that Augmented Reality is more than just about the visual sense, but has to include all the senses. Over the years, he’s been working hard to prove his idea and created many prototypes of augmented reality systems that involve the other senses.

Adrian David Cheok  was the Founder and Director of the Mixed Reality Lab, Singapore. and previously worked in real-time systems, soft computing, and embedded computing in Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs, Japan.

Mr. Cheok has been working on research covering mixed reality, human-computer interfaces, wearable computers and ubiquitous computing, fuzzy systems, embedded systems, power electronics. He has successfully obtained funding for externally funded projects in the area of wearable computers and mixed reality from Nike, National Oilwell Varco, Defense Science Technology Agency, Ministry of Communications and Arts, National Arts Council, Singapore Science Center, Hougang Primary School. The research output has included numerous high quality academic journal papers, research awards, keynote speeches, international exhibitions, numerous government demonstrations including to the President and Prime Minister of Singapore, broadcast television worldwide broadcasts on his research (such as CNN/CNBC/ABC/Discovery/National Geographic etc.), and hundreds of international press media articles.

In addition, Mr. Cheok has been a keynote and invited speaker at numerous international conferences and events. He was invited to exhibit for two years in the Ars Electronica Museum of the Future, launching in the Ars Electronica Festival 2003. His works “Human Pacman”, “Magic Land”, and “Metazoa Ludens”, were each selected as one of the worlds top inventions by Wired and invited to be exhibited in Wired NextFest 2005 and 2007. More…

We have added this year a new membership option. With a mere $49 you can become an official member of the Augmented Reality Event. What is that? A new ploy to extract more from attendees?

Well, first you should know that ARE is a non-profit organization, initiated for the sole purpose of helping to advance the Augmented Reality industry. The new membership has several purposes:

First, it is a new approach to gauge the interest and help fund the video recording and distribution of all event sessions. It has always been the achilles heel of the event. We never found the time and funds to properly edit and distribute the content. So if you are in favor of ARE videos – this is your opportunity to vote. The value of these videos extends way beyond the mere $49.

The second purpose is more strategic in nature. ARE has always been about raising awareness to AR and helping advance the industry. And yet, although it established itself as the largest global AR event, it only takes place once a year. But when you think about it, each year, key players across the industry see the value in taking the time and uniting with their peers for 2 days in Santa Clara; they extract tremendous value from this get together which persists for many subsequent months. So, how about we use this opportunity to build a formal community that will join forces in helping promote awareness to augmented reality on a global and local basis? How about we extend the magic for the entire year?

We are not yet sure where this will go, but thought we should give it a go. If people sign up and show solidarity, it will be a great motivator to keep it going even after we all leave Santa Clara.

ISMAR 2011 provides a venue for showing Mixed and Augmented Reality demonstrations to the community. The live demonstrations may be related to implementations of techniques presented in the papers, posters or panels, as well as systems not yet presented elsewhere. We encourage a diverse range of submissions and demonstrations from both Science & Technology and Arts, Media, & Humanities tracks. The main selection criteria will be the expected general interest of the demonstration to the Mixed and Augmented Reality community. The Best Demo Award will be presented at the end of the conference.

Submission guidelines

To submit a proposal for a demo, please send an email to ismar11demos@gmail.com with a PDF document containing:

• The title of the proposed demonstration

• The names of the authors

• The name, telephone number and email address of the contact person

• A description of your demo including

• What makes it unique and special?

• Why will it draw a crowd?

• Would an AR expert want to see it and why?

• Keywords

• Information about the demonstration space

• The amount of floor or desktop space needed (length, width, height in meters)

• The list of equipment you will bring (be as detailed as you can be)

• Any power, socket and outlet needs

• Networking requirements (ethernet, wifi, non-HTTP)

• Any environment requirements (Does this demonstration require a dark environment? Does it produce or is sensitive to a large amount of noise or light? Etc.)

Pencil and Paper are not Dead: Augmented Reality Sketching Games at VR 2010

Tomorrow, I’ll be at the IEEE VR 2010 conference in Boston. Monday is dedicated to a series of augmented reality presentations.

In-Place Sketching for Content Authoring in Augmented Reality Games

When it comes to AR games – we are all still searching for “Pong” a simple game that will captivate millions of players and kickoff this new genre.

One of the challenges in many AR games, is the reliance on printouts of ugly markers.

Plus many games use the markers as controllers which is a bit awkward (especially to a bystander).

Sketching offers an alternative for a more natural user interface.

Sketching is more natural than drawing with a mouse on a PC, even more intuitive that a touch screen. That’s still the first thing that kids are taught in school.

It’s not necessarily a better interface – but it’s an alternative that offers a very intuitive interaction, and enriched the player’s experience. I believe it could create a whole new genre of games.

In place sketching in AR games has huge potential in gaming – but many questions arise:

  • What’s the design space for such a game?
  • What are the tools to be used?
  • How do you understand what the player meant in a sketch?
  • What’s the flow of interaction?
  • How do you track it?

What’s “In-place AR”?  It’s when the augmented content is extracted from the real world (an illustration, an image , a sketch, or a real life object)

Here is the sequence of research efforts leading to this:

Here are 2 game prototypes the team created called AR Gardener and Sketch-Chaser. It is played on a regular white board.

AR Gardener

Draw symbols on the white board and 3D content is pulled from a database of objects to appeas in an Augmented Reality (AR) scene.

The sketch determines what object to create, its location, scale, and rotation.

The outer line sketched here defines the game anchor and is served for tracking; in this game it becomes a brown ridge.

Simple symbols drawn generate a couple of benches, a cabin, and in the spirit of the playground theme – rockers, and swings.

Virtual elements could also be created based on a real life object such as a leaf; here it is used to create a patch of grass using the color and shape of the leaf (and no, it can’t recognize that’s a leaf, or 3D object whatsoever)

The color of the marker could define the type of virtual object created: For example, blue represents water. Other objects that are put in it will sink.

Sketch-Chaser

In the second game you basically create an obstacle course for a car chase.

It’s a “catch the flag” or tag game. The winner is whoever has the flag for the most time.

First you draw, then play.

Once again, the continuous brown line represents a ridge and bounds the game.

A small circle with a dot in it represents the starting point for the cars.

A flag becomes the flag to capture. A simple square creates a building, etc.

The player adds more ridges to make it more challenging. Adds blue to generate a little pond  (which also indicates a different physical trait to this area)

Then – graphics are generated, the players grab their beloved controllers and the battle begins!

This research represents an opportunity for a whole new kind of game experience that could make kids play more in the real world.

Many questions still remain, such as how do you recognize in a sketch what the player really means without requiring her to be an artist or an architect. Or where does the sketch fit in the game play? Before, after or during?

Now, it’s up to game designers to figure out what sketching techniques work best, what’s fun, what’s interesting, and what’s just a doodle.
