** Nice to see the Kinect out in the working world, rather than just slaving away in hacker space.  The video is instructive as it shows real customers using the product.  Personally, I wouldn’t look good in any of those dresses, but that’s just me.  *cough*

Virtual Fitting Room for Topshop

AR Door, a Russian agency specialized in Augmented Reality solutions, teamed up with Topshop, a woman and man clothes retailer, to create a virtual fitting room for a new collection of dresses Dress up.

A special kiosk for the fitting room was installed at the flagman Topshop store in Moscow at the shopping centre European, 5-8 May 2011.

The virtual fitting room is built on the most sophisticated technologies: augmented reality and Microsoft Kinect. Augmented reality allows the customers to select a garment off the rack without having to try it on physically.  As a customer, you see yourself onscreen with a 3D copy of a dress. Kinect allows the user to control the program by simple gestures pushing virtual buttons right in the air.

To activate the program you don’t need special markers: the built-in camera tracks a person’s body and superimposes over it a 3D model of the dress.

A unique feature that allows the customers to watch both the front and the back parts of the dress was deployed in the Topshop fitting room for the first time in the world practice.

I found this week’s video on Toby’s weekend “linkfest”. It’s one more example how augmented reality can upgrade almost any old board game, this time making “battleships” more interactive. As Toby rightfully states, there’s no need for two boards when AR is deployed, as the two players can be shown different views of the same board. Still, it’s a cool demo:

Facebook 3D Movie Maker Contest

AR door has teamed up with LG Electronics to create the Facebook 3D Movie Maker Contest.

Through advanced features LG 3D Moviemaker is pushing the boundaries of reality.  Trendsetting technologies bring the immersive 3D experience where instead of just watching scenes you can actually be part of them. The contest allows you to become the main character of a movie and get valuable presents for your skills and efforts.

To participate in the contest you should first go to the application on Facebook http://apps.facebook.com/lgmovie/, choose any genre you like (or all of them) and shoot a video. There are 4 genres to choose: horror, animation, fantasy and action. Choose the genre, print out the markers. Make sure you face fits the marked shape on the screen. When you are ready, press the rec button. When the video is done, don’t forget to send it to the contest.

After moderation all the videos submitted for the contest will be stored in the Events section of the web page http://www.facebook.com/LGRussia?v=app_2344061033. The winner who gets for the video the most number of likes will be rewarded with 3D TV by LG. The application is based on the patented Augmented Reality technology D’Fusion.

ISMAR10 Video Montage

The fine folks at AR Door sent me a link to this ISMAR10 video that they assembled from their experience.  Watching it really makes me wish I’d been able to attend.  Some of the people and AR examples I recognized, but a few that I didn’t know, piqued my interested.  I’d love to hear more about the virtual couch.

AR Door and LG 3D TV

Multiple forms of AR (marker and markerless) together in the same camera view.  Plus a little furry action for you animal types.  My only disappointment was that the AR is being used as an advertisement *for* LG 3D TV and won’t actually show up on it.

AR Door Moscow has Created Augmented Reality for LG

AR Door has spearheaded the creation and integration of augmented reality for LG advertising campaign in Russia. The campaign included the integration of augmented reality into the promo website, devoted to a release of a new LG 3D TV model.

Augmented reality is a term for a direct or indirect live view of a real-world environment, whose elements are augmented by virtual computer-generated imagery.

The web page (www.lg.com/ru/3d) incorporating augmented reality allows the users to enjoy a 3D world just right at their homes.

By visiting the web page the customers can flash the ad in front of a web camera. After the web cam recognizes the image, jungles appears just in front of the user, on the screen. The user can enjoy the colors of the fascinating scenery, watch parrots and a puma. One more feature is a possibility to take screenshots of your experience.

Face tracking technology tracks the movements of the head and superimposes 3D glasses and puma’s ears on the user’s face and head. The markerless technology of an augmented reality – D’Fusion – allows the camera to recognize not black-and-white images but colorful ones, people’s faces, bottles, etc. D’Fusion is currently admitted to be the most flawless AR technology.
